Rare Marine Nematode Discovered on Tamil Nadu Beach

Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new species of marine nematode—a type of microscopic worm—on a beach in Tamil Nadu. Named Pheronous jairajpurii, it’s only the third known species in its genus, previously found in South Africa and China.

This tiny worm plays a big role in the ecosystem, helping keep the ocean environment healthy. It’s also a bioindicator, which means it helps scientists measure the health of marine habitats.

The species was named in honor of late Prof. M.S. Jairajpuri, a leading Indian expert in nematode research.

What is ZSI?
The Zoological Survey of India is a government organization under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. It studies and documents the animal life of India, playing a key role in wildlife research and conservation.

ZSI Director Dr. Dhriti Banerjee said the discovery shows how much biodiversity still remains hidden in our oceans—and why it’s so important to protect it.
